Bill O'Reilly's cricket skills were mostly self-taught, as due to a lot of moving in his childhood, he could not enroll for coaching at one particular place. He made his debut for New South Wales in the 1927-'28 season. His Test debut came in the 1931-'32 season, in the 4th Test against South Africa at Adelaide.
O'Reilly is remembered as a handy batsman, lower down the order. But he is famed for the brilliant leg spinners that he used to bowl. He had great variety and produced leg breaks, off-breaks, googlies, and top spinners with ease. He had a unique action and bowled with a lot of aggression.
In domestic cricket, Bill O'Reilly took 774 wickets at an average of 16.6. In his 27 Test matches, O'Reilly took 144 wickets at an average of 22.6. After retirement, O'Reilly became a cricket journalist and contributed till 1988. He was also a popular TV and radio commentator till his death in 1992.
He is one of the ten inaugural members of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame and was posthumously included in 1996. He was also Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1935.
