Charles Bannerman entered into an inviolable wedlock with history when he played in the test match against England on Jan 28-31, 1887. This test has now been recognized as the first test match between England and Australia.
Those who had the good fortune to watch Charles Bannerman have described him as a fluent batsman, whose grace was perfectly matched by his impeccable technique. He could play almost all the cricketing shots with equal ease.
In 1857 in the test match against the visiting English side, Charles Bannerman stroked his way to a breezy 165 runs, while the rest of his teammates could not even exceed 20 runs. Australia won the test and the series against the much-weakened England. This was the first time an Australian had scored a century against England.
Charles Bannerman's promising test career was put to a halt by his illness. He took up coaching duties in Melbourne and Sydney and at Christ's College, Christchurch in New Zealand, later he also tried his hand at umpiring.
