David Hookes

Full name David William Hookes
Born May 3, 1955, Mile End, Adelaide, South Australia
Major teams Australia, South Australia
Batting style Left-hand bat

David Hookes had a promising start to his career when as a 21 year old playing for South Australia, he created news by scoring five centuries from six innings in 1977. Such an impressive performance earned him a berth in the test side against England in the same year. David Hookes confirmed his talent with 56 runs in the second innings that included five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig.

David Hookes was a part of the World Series Cricket in the 1970s. Playing in one of these matches, he got his jaw broken by a rising delivery from Andy Roberts. The injury marked the decline of his career in test cricket.

David Hookes’ highest score in test cricket came against Sri Lanka, when he raced to 143 runs in 152 balls. Inspite of a disappointing test career, David Hookes remained a prolific scorer at the domestic level. His 306 not out against Tasmania is remembered for the brashness and the audacity of the array of shots.

David Hookes played in 23 test matches and scored 1306 runs at an average of 34.36. In the years following his retirement, David Hookes was frequently seen on television chat shows and many cricket programmes, until he took up the post of the coach of the Victorian team in 2002.

David Hookes was involved in an unfortunate fight with a security guard in a hotel in Australia while celebrating a victory over South Australian. The injuries received turned out to be fatal and he expired shortly after being on life support.
