Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1990

Dean Jones played cricket for Australia from1984 to 1994. He made his debut against West Indies at Port of Spain. It was one of these days when the West Indian fast bowling was at its pinnacle. Australia's first innings was ripped apart by some clinical bowling for the score of 255. Dean Jones hung on with a pride salvaging 48. Perhaps the best inning played by Dean Jones was the 210 he scored against India in Madras (now Chennai). The runs were scored under extremely hot and humid conditions and after his mammoth innings, Dean Jones was hospitalized and treated for severe dehydration.

Dean Jones, besides being an entertaining batsman, was also an electric fielder and a great runner between the wickets. Dean Jones did not played as many tests as he deserved. In 52 tests appearances, he scored 6068 runs at an average of 46.55. His one-day record is extremely impressive and while he played he was regarded as the best one-day batsman. In 164 matches, Dean Jones scored 6068 runs at an average of 44.61.

His matter-of-fact talks made him quite popular in his new calling. In August 2006, Dean Jones ruffled feathers when he called South Africa's Hashim Amla, a devout Muslim, "terrorist".
