Dennis Lillee, remembered for his pace and loved for his pleasing personality, is perhaps one of the greatest cricketers that Australia has ever produced. He is said to have taken many wickets with his pace bowling and many by merely intimidating the opponents! After a successful 1972 Ashes tour, many believed his career was in threat after he suffered a spinal stress fracture the following year. However, Lillee made a fantastic resurgence following a regime of exhaustive treatment. In the mid 70s, he, along with Jeff Thomson became the most dreaded bowler and the English suffered the most with back-to-back defeats to Australia, both away and at home. After a match-shaping performance in the 1977 Centenary Test against England, he took a break from the national squad and contributed time to the World Series Cricket. While playing there, he kept working on his fitness and ceased every opportunity to improve his game. His best Test figures came in an incredible match against the West Indies in 1981. Lillee also went past Gibbs' record in the same match with Larry Gomes' dismissal. He ended with 7 for 83 in the first innings and 10 wickets for the match, and Australia celebrated a phenomenal victory. Lillee, who was named in Australia's Test Team of the Century and the Hall of Fame, is now an international bowling coach.
