Greg Chappell was one batsman who believed that scoring a century was the best way to celebrate an occasion. He scored centuries on his test debut, on his first test as a captain and also on his last match. Not a few regard Greg Chappell as one of the best Australian batsmen of all time.
But the fact was Greg Chappell loved scoring centuries. His wild indulgence of 24 centuries in 87 matches was considered very unchristian-like by his rivals.
Greg Chappell, besides being a great batsman, was a motivational captain for 48 test matches.
Greg Chappell's otherwise illustrious career was blemished by an infamous episode when he asked his brother Trevor Chappell to do underarm bowling in order to ensure a win for Australia. This was seen as blatantly against the ethics of sportsmanship. The episode brought much embarrassment to the Chappell brothers, who have admitted it as a regrettable moment in their careers.
Greg Chappell scored 7110 runs from the 87 tests that he played, at an average of 53.86. He also featured in 74 one-day internationals and scored 2331 runs at an average of 40.18.
Greg Chappell retired in 1984. Greg Chappell remains busy as an inspirational coach, who has built his reputation as a hard taskmaster.
