Steve Waugh has said that Justin Langer is the world's best batsmen. However, with such a huge compliment in his kitty and an average of over forty, Justin Langer still finds it difficult to find a permanent place in the Australian side. But after his performances that were nothing short than brilliant in the past few years, he has finally managed to cement his place in the test squad, and along with Mathew Hayden, forms a dangerous opening pair that scores runs prolifically.
In his debut match against the West Indies, Langer took a blow on the head and yet made a fighting 54. However, he played only eight tests in the next six years. He returned at No. 3, as the selectors expected him to be the next David Boon. After saving the almost lost Hobart Test of 1999-'00 along with Adam Gilchrist and then slaughtering a blistering 122 in Auckland, he secured his place in the team. His form continued and he made a staggering total of 1481 runs in 2004. In a rather disappointing show by the Australian line-up against England in 2005, Langer stood out and was the top Aussie scorer in the series with 394 runs at an average of 43.77.
Injuries have always forced him out of games and it nearly ended his career just before he could play his 100th Test, as a Makhaya Ntini bouncer landed him in hospital and posed a threat to his career. However, he bounced back and continues to play the game. He has played just eight ODIs and it is rather unfortunate that the world gets to see so less of him in the shorter version of the game. However, it gives him time to spend with his family and pursue his other interests like writing and taekwondo.
