Kim Hughes began his first-class career with West Australia by scoring a century. His test start too, which came in1977 against England, was made bright by an elegant century in his fourth test. Kim Hughes remained with the Australian side that did not join the World Cricket Series, and this lead to estranged relationship with his seniors like Greg Chappell, Rod Marsh and Denis Lillee. In the absence of senior players, Kim Hughes was handed the captaincy of the test side while only in his 11th test. Kim Hughes had a forgettable experience as a captain; his tenure was marked by 4 wins, 13 losses and 11 draws. Kim Hughes’ proved his mettle when tested under fire in what is considered to be one of the finest innings in test cricket. The innings came against the West Indies in 1981-82, a period when the West Indian bowlers were rampaging past batsmen all over the world. Kim Hughes made a fighting 100, while his entire team tumbled for 198. Towards the end of his career, Kim Hughes felt he was being victimized for not having been a part of WCS; he ended his career as a disillusioned man who could have achieved so much more.
