Mark Waugh

Full name Mark Edward Waugh
Born June 2, 1965, Canterbury, Sydney, New South Wales
Major teams Australia, Essex, New South Wales
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling Style Right-arm Off Break

A part of the famous Waugh twins, Mark Waugh was a very stylish batsman who finished his career as one of Australia's leading run getters. Apart from batting, he also was a very handy bowler and a brilliant fielder. He holds the world record for taking most catches-181-the most any player other than a wicketkeeper has taken. Mark Waugh was noticed in the late 1980s when he was playing very well for New South Wales. Soon he was called up to the national team but it was indeed ironical as his inclusion to the team came at the cost of his twin Steve's exclusion. He made a century on debut, scoring a wonderful 138. That was in 1991, and just the beginning of a long, fruitful career. Though he did have some initial hiccups, Mark Waugh settled into the scene soon and started scoring prolifically. In 1995 he made a brilliant 125 against the West Indies and in the 1996 World Cup, he made three centuries while opening the innings.

In 1998, an ugly incident of match fixing cast a dark shadow on his brilliant career. He and Shane Warne were said to have been involved in match fixing in the Indian subcontinent. After being ignored for the 2002 England tour, Mark Waugh retired from international cricket. He did continue to play domestic cricket for two more seasons but soon retired from cricket completely and turned to journalism. He now writes for the Sydney Morning Herald. He was also honored by being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Cricketscorelive.com provides the profile of Michael Slater and other cricketers around the world.
