Matthew Elliott had an ominous start to his test match career. Picked to play in the test series against the touring West Indies, Matthew Elliott suffered a collision with his teammate Mark Waugh; as a consequence he missed the series and had to undergo a knee surgery. Matthew Elliott made a comeback in the 1997 Ashes series in England and scored two centuries in the series, including his best 199 runs. But in the test matches subsequent to the successful series, Matthew Elliott seemed to have befriended the abominable inconsistency and abided by its friendship till curtain was drawn on his test career. In the domestic circle however Matthew Elliott remained a prolific scorer. In 2003-04 season, Matthew Elliott scored 1381 runs in Pura Cup. This surpassed the previous tournament highest and was in turn bettered by Michael Bevan the following season.

In April 2005, decided to leave Victorian team and shift to South Australia as a coach cum player. His decision was met with strong resistance from Victoria, who later acceded following the decision of the tribunal. Matthew Elliott's first season with South Australia was not been a remarkable one.
