Merv Hughes was extremely popular with the crowd in his cricketing days as a bowler with an unusual moustache and a typical fast bowlers attitude. Merv Hughes was cheered by chants of ‘Sumo’ by the crowd in England every time he ran to the wicket to bowl in the second Ashes tour in 1993.

Merv Hughes looked down at the batsmen from the height of 6’4” and had a habit of giving a long, cold stare at the batmen. Merv Hughes suffered from weight problems and took recourse to different fitness programmes to keep himself in shape.

Merv Hughes’ debut, which came against India at Adelaide in 1985, was most unimpressive one. He finished with figures of 1 for 123. Merv Hughes took time to get into a groove in test cricket, he worked on his accuracy and variations and he also acquired the service of a bouncer, which proved very useful.

Merv Hughes played in 53 test matches and bagged 212 wickets at an average of 28.38.He was not regarded as an ideal one-day bowler, as a result he played in only 33 ODIs.

Hughes took over as a selector for the Australian cricket team from Allan Border in 2005.
