Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1962
Many remember Richie as the ever-charismatic captain of Australia who brought home the ashes and defended it successfully for tow years. His viciously spinning deliveries were an extension of the kind person he was- teasing, inviting and courageous.
He played in 63 test matches and took 248 wickets at 27.03 runs apiece. He was not too unfamiliar with batting either; in fact he did come up with good innings once in a while, including three test centuries.
After hanging his cricket gloves in 1964, Richie Benuad next vocation as a commentator has also brought him considerable renown. His rich baritone and clear and incisive views have indeed found an ideal medium.
Richie Benuad has also been instrumental in mentoring great cricketers like Glen Chappel and Shane Warne.
