Simon O'Donnell was a true athlete and this was proved by his proficiency of two games-Australian Rules Football (AFL) and cricket. He gave up a very promising career in AFL to concentrate on cricket. He was successful and soon found a permanent place in the Australian national squad.
Simon O'Donnell was more successful in ODIs than in Tests. He played just 6 Tests, where as he was in the ODI team a good 87 times. He was a handy lower order batsman capable of scoring quickly. He held the record of making the fastest fifty (in 18 balls) and the record stood for almost six years before Sanath Jayasuriya broke it. But he was a better bowler and took 108 wickets in his career. He was also a part of the 1987 World Cup winning team and finished as the most economic Australian bowler in the series. However, just after the World Cup he was diagnosed with cancer and that kept him out of the game for sometime. But he made a brilliant recovery and returned to play cricket for a few more years. His last ODI was against India in 1991. Post retirement, Simon O'Donnell has become a renowned media person.
