Probably one of most celebrated Australian cricketers ever, Steve Waugh was a marvelous cricketer who not only played the game well, but became an ambassador of it to the whole world.
He made his debut before his famous twin Mark and ironically once lost his spot in the team when Mark made his debut. However, Steve Waugh came back to the team and had a glorious run, overcoming his shortcomings and gradually turning into an integral part of the Australian national team. He performed very well in the 1987 World Cup and also scored 393 runs in a series against England in 1989 before he could be dismissed. He played very well in the years between 1995 and 1997. He scored a mammoth 200 against the West Indies and coupled it up with two hundreds in the 1997 Ashes series.
In 1998 he took over the captaincy from Mark Taylor, and though he did not make a very impressive start, he soon carried his brilliance into his captaincy as well and led the team to fifteen Test victories. He then took side to a famous World Cup victory in 1999 and had the rare honor of wining the cup twice. However, in 2001-'02 he was hastily dropped from the one day side and never made it back to the team. He did continue as captain of the Test team and success was his for the taking. Australia won the 2002-'03 Ashes under Steve Waugh. He retired in 2003-'04 and got a fitting farewell at the conclusion of the Test against India.
He has authored a few books and been actively involved in charity work since his retirement.
