Without a lot of talent and experience to back him, Khaled Mahmud became the captain of Bangladesh. He took charge of a team that was not performing well, and unfortunately continued its sloppy form even while Khaled Mahmud captained the side. Khaled Mahmud was an all-rounder whose main forte was bowling, but he chipped in with the bat at times as well. The highest point of his career probably came when he was adjourned man of the match in the 1999 World Cup match against Pakistan, which the mighty Pakistanis lost to Bangladesh. This win also gave Bangladesh a Test status. But Khaled Mahmud's luck was no better in tests as well as he and his side failed miserably and at one point his bowling average touched 400, an all time high, only adding to his woes. After the humiliating series loss to England in 2003, he was dropped from the side. He retired soon after, but quickly changed his mind and was available for selection. However he was not selected in the Test squad and dabbled only in the ODIs. He retired in February 2006, and signed off with a gusty batting display against Sri Lanka to a standing ovation.
