As one of the most experienced players in the Bangladeshi side, Mohammad Rafique has contributed many a times to the team's success. His career was affected by controversy when his bowling action was reported as suspect, but he returned in May 2003, with figures of 6 for 77 against South Africa at Dhaka. Towards the end of 2003, he was the leading wicket-taker in the series against England.
He also contributes with the bat and his 77 in 1998 was instrumental in Bangladesh's victory over Kenya. In May 2004 he made a brilliant 111, batting at No. 9 to help secure a valuable first-innings lead against West Indies in St Lucia.
The Bangladeshi Cricketer of the Year in 2004-05, he got past an ego issues with coach Dav Whatmore to remain in the national squad past 36 years of age. He got 9 wickets when Bangladesh almost beat Australia at Fatullah in April 2006. He is approaching the magical double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in both forms of the game.
