Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1947
Knighted for Services to Cricket 1996
This extremely well built fast bowler was, at one point of time, shouldering the weight of the entire England's pace attack. He was persistently accurate and had a deceptive leg cutter to which he gave a decent tweak.
Alec Bedser made his debut against India at Lords in 1946, when he was 28 years old and had the experience of only 13 first class matches. He took 11 wickets in each of his first two matches.
He was instrumental in England's ashes win in 1953, when he was aged 35. In the series, he took 35 wickets at an average of 17.85.
In first class cricket, which he played for 21 years, Alec Bedser took 100 wickets in a season 11 times, finishing with a total of 1924 wickets.
Even after his retirement, Alec Bedser chose to stay close to cricket; he was the England selector for 21 years, a chairman between 1969 to 1981 and the manager of England team for two overseas tours.
A recognition came in the form of knighthood in 1996 and in the ensuing year, he was made the president of Surrey.
