The cricketing story of Basil Lewis D'Oliveira inadvertently leads to an ugly of Apartheid episode in South Africa. Being branded 'colored' was bad enough, Basil Lewis D'Oliveira was barred form playing first class cricket in South Africa. He captained South Africa's non-white team.
Assisted by John Arlott, Basil Lewis D'Oliveira went to England and played cricket for Middleton and later Worcestershire in 1964. He soon became a British citizen and was eligible to play for the test side.
Basil Lewis D'Oliveira was selected to play in the test series against South Africa in 1968-68, but was kept back in the wake of protest from South African president BJ Vorster.
Basil Lewis D'Oliveira made his debut against the touring West Indian side. He went on to become one of the best all rounders. Basil Lewis D'Oliveira played in 44 test matches and scored 2484 runs at an average of 40.06. Basil Lewis D'Oliveira bade bye to test cricket in 1972.
2004 saw the naming of a yearly series between England and South Africa after Basil Lewis D'Oliveira- Basil D'Oliveira Trophy.
