Full name William Voce Born August 8, 1909, Annesley Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire Major teams England, Nottinghamshire Batting style Right-hand bat
Bill Voce was an English fast bowler, infamous for the part he played in the Bodyline series along with Harold Larwood. Bill Voce played first class cricket for Nottinghamshire and his ability to create tremendous pace while maintaining a good line and length made him get noticed. While Donald Bradman was in his best form and seemed quite unstoppable, future English captain Douglas Jardine, Nottinghamshire captain Arthur Carr, Voce and fellow Notts bowler Harold Larwood met up to think of a ploy to defeat Bradman and the Australians. Voce and Larwood were instructed to bowl close to the body of the Australian batsman, and hence the strategy for the renowned Bodyline bowling was devised. Voce was not as fast as Larwood, but was dangerous nonetheless. He had the ability to pick up wickets and in his 27 Tests picked up 98 wickets at a decent average of 27.88. He was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1933. Interestingly, he never spoke of the Bodyline series till the day he lived.
