Brian Statham was one of England's premium pace bowlers, known for his great precision and consistency. He played a lot of county cricket for Lancashire and was even its captain. Statham took a total of 2,260 wickets at an average of average 16.36, brilliant by any standards. Among these included 252 international wickets which he collected in his 70 Tests at an average of 24.84. In the early 1950s, Statham formed a thriving partnership with fellow seamer Frank Tyson. However the highlight of his career was the brilliant partnership that he formed with the great Fred Trueman. After retiring from the game in 1968, Statham served Lancashire as a committee member (1970-95) and president (1997-98); he was appointed CBE in 1966. However he did not have a peaceful life and was even left in financial shambles. He was caught in a wrong job which deprived him of mental peace and also left him quite helpless. It was at this point that his old teammates, including Trueman contributed in their own ways to help him out. He died in 2000 of leukemia.
