One of the most graceful batsmen to play for England, David Gower, at the time of his retirement was the highest test scorer for England. David Gower was never a powerful batsman. His graceful bat used to come down mostly gently on the ball and after a soft whisper was passed, the ball would scamper to keep its appointment at the fence.
David Gower's laidback attitude often brought unto him criticisms of levity. This was one the reasons for his fall out with Graham Gooch, who brought his foot down against David Gower's selection for the India tour.
David Gower captained England for a while and was instrumental in shaping the team. His finest moment in test cricket came in 1985 Ashes series, where he scored three big hundreds.
David Gower played in 117 test matches and scored 8231 runs at an average of 44.25. In 114 ODIs, David Gower scored 3170 runs at an average of 30.77.
