Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1939 One of the all time batting greats of English cricket, Denis Compton played in the time when Don Bradman was at his greatest. He was only nineteen when he scored his first test century, which came against the touring Australian side lead by Don Bradman in 1938. His innings of 76 runs in the rain affected match of the same series drew admiration from Bradman. In 1939-40 season, Denis Compton scored 2468 runs, which included 120 against the West Indies at Lords. Unfortunately, the war, which robbed peace and prosperity from all nations, also robbed Denis Compton of his most productive years of cricket. In 1947-48, Denis Compton scored 3816 runs, which included 18 centuries. A bulk of these runs came against the touring South African team. Denis Compton's eventful career spanned 78 test matches, where he scored 5807 runs at an average of 50.16. He made 16 test centuries, while in first class cricket he had 123 centuries.

In recognition of Denis Compton's deep friendship with Australia's Keith Miller and also of the longstanding cricketing rivalry between Australia and England, the player of the series in Ashes series is awarded Miller-Compton Medal. Denis Compton excelled not only as a cricketer, but also played international football. He played club football for Arsenal.
