When England was touring the West Indies in 1989-'90, they wanted a pacer who could compete with the famous Caribbean speedsters. Devon Malcolm almost acted as the English weapon and he was all about pace. He was once hit on the head at the Oval, but he responded by ripping apart the South African line up. But unfortunately that was all that the world saw of his fire. He soon lost his control and confidence and was sidelined from the team. He was also involved in the infamous Cape Town argument with Ray Illingworth, and after that all one got to see of Devon Malcolm was in domestic cricket.
