Most famous for the "Laker's match" in 1956 at Old Trafford, when he took nineteen wickets in England's victory against Australia, Jim Laker played for England in the 1950s
A Yorkshire native, he was known as an elegant off-spin bowler. He constantly performed well against Australia, and was in a triumphant partnership with Tony Lock, a left-arm orthodox spinner. Apart from his brilliant performance with the English squad, he also played for Surrey when they dominated the county championship with seven successive wins from 1952 to 1958.
Laker achieved the rare feat of taking 10 wickets in a Test match innings in the fourth Test against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956 (the only other bowler to take all 10 wickets is Anil Kumble of India in 1999). He also had figures of 9 for 37 in the first innings. His bowling figures for the match stood at 19-90. Amazingly, Laker had also dismissed the all the men of the same Australians side earlier in the season while playing for Surrey.
Adjourned Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1952, he played 46 Test matches and took 193 wickets with an average of 21.24. In domestic matches, he took 1,944 wickets at 18.41.
After his retiring from Surrey, he sometimes played for Auckland and Essex. In later years Laker was a famous commentator on BBC television's cricket coverage. He died in Putney, London.
