Mark Butcher was a gutsy opening batsman who gave many bright starts to England in test matches. Alike most other opening batsmen, Mark Butcher was adept at playing pace bowling, though spin bowling exposed some of his inadequacies as a batsman.
Mark Butcher's test career, which lasted 71 tests, was marked by few phases of brilliance. His knock of 173 not out against Australia is regarded as the highpoint of his career. In 71 tests, Mark Butcher made 4288 runs at an average of 34.58.
Strangely, even after many so many test appearances Mark Butcher was never considered suitable one-day cricket.
Mark Butcher is also an accomplished singer and a guitar player. He sang a beautifully self-composed song "You are never gone" on the occasion of Ben Hollioake's funeral.
