A much underrated batsman, Mike Gatting's career was marked by infrequent controversies and some brilliant performances. It took Mike Gatting 54 innings to score his first century and by the end of his career, he had compiled ten of them.
Mike Gatting was handed the captaincy for 1986-87 Ashes series. He came back victorious only to get involved in an ugly argument with the Pakistani umpire- Shakoor Rana, in a series in Pakistan. Mike Gatting was retained as a captain, inspite of the shameful incident, in the series in South Africa, where further controversies awaited him. The bar maid controversy stripped Mike Gatting off his captaincy.
Mike Gatting received Shane Warne's first delivery in test cricket known as the 'ball of the century'. The ball pitched outside Mike Gatting's leg stump and turned viciously to dislodge the off-stump, leaving him stunned.
Mike Gatting played in 79 test matches to score 4409 runs at an average of 35.55 runs per inning. He averaged close to 50 in his first class matches.
