Nasser Hussain, born of an Indian father and an English mother, was the first English captain of mixed ethnicity. His captaincy was marked by innovative ideas and inspirational performances. Under him England managed to salvage some pride as a team of formidable standing. He led England in 45 test matches and enjoyed the highest win percentage since Bob Willis.
Nasser Hussain was a stylish batsman, who could play flowing drives with as much ease as he could hook the ball. His 96 test appearances brought him 5764 runs at an average of 37.18. While he played, he was a crisis man for England with nine of his fourteen centuries coming at a time when England had lost early wickets.
Nasser Hussain announced his retirement in May 2004. He has now taken up work as a commentator in Sky Sports.
