Peter May was always regarded as a cricketing sensation. As a right-handed batsman, he was a very strong driver, and was considered by many as the most elegant and comprehensive batsman of the time.
Having made his debut in 1951 against South Africa, he shined instantly by making a brilliant hundred. This sealed his fortunes as a permanent in the side, and was also made captain. May captained England on 41 occasions, winning 20 games, more than any other England captain. He lost 10 and drew 11 games. He remained in the side till the late fifties when an illness forced him out of the game. A comeback effort in 1961 was anything but productive, and he finally called it quits in 1963 from all forms of the game.
May was declared Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1952. He led Surrey from 1957 to 1963, winning the County Championship in his first two seasons, the final two victories in the record-breaking sequence of seven from 1952 to 1958. He died in 1994 from brain tumor, just four days prior to his 65th birthday.
