Having helped the England under 19 side to victory in the 1998 World Cup, Robert Key had managed to catch the attention of many. His immense ability to play shots all over the ground and score runs, earned him a place in the England national side in 2002. Marcus Trescothick's injury gave him an opportunity to debut against India. Some great performances in Australia followed, although he did tend to get out when seemingly set, particularly after a gap in play. But in 2004, he returned to form, scoring 1000 first-class runs for Kent, and scoring a glorious 221 against West Indies at home, playing after a gap of a year. In the 2004-05 South Africa series he made a crucial 50 in the series-clinching victory at Johannesburg. Now as Kent's captain for the 2006 season, he is looking to improve his game. Seeing him captain the England A team against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, it was clear he still persisted in the selectors' minds.
