An extraordinary bowler, Sydney Barnes continues to fascinate from a standpoint of over hundred years as he did during his playing days. In his first class career, which spanned 36 years, he played in 133 matches and took 719 wickets. Sydney Barnes remains an only player to be selected while playing league cricket. A.C Maclaren, the England captain in the overseas tour to Australia in 1901-02, picked up Sydney Barnes after assessing him at the nets. Sydney Barnes took five for 65 in the first innings of the first match. In the second test match Barnes took six for 42 and seven for 121. After some dispute with the organizers of his county side in 1903, Sydney Barnes stopped playing first class cricket for a while and played for Staffordshire in the Minor County Championships and in Lancashire League. His record for Staffordshire was 1441 wickets at an average of 8.15 runs per wicket.

Sydney Barnes' 49 wickets against South Africa in 1913-14 is a record for the most number of wickets by a bowler in a series. He took only four tests to finish with such a tally. Sydney Barnes played first class cricket till the age of 57 years. Cricketscorelive.com gives information on Sydney Barnes and other Great Cricket Players.
