Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1961

Ted Dexter was a magnificent batsman for England who could tear down any bowling on his day. Many consider his knock of 70 from 73 balls against West Indies as his finest, perhaps because England were in trouble when he came out to bat and Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith had never looked meaner.
Of course Ted Dexter scored runs higher than that. In fact six of his nine centuries exceeded 140 runs. If the situation required Ted Dexter could, without much qualms, restrain his strokes and plod his way to a long inning. But without doubt, Ted Dexter loved nothing better than bludgeoning the bowler's reputation out of the cricket field.
Ted Dexter's usefulness as a bowler was underscored by his 66 test wickets in 62 matches and 419 first class wickets from 327 matches.
Next to cricket, Ted Dexter found passion in golf. In fact he approached the latter with so much dedication that he won Oxford & Cambridge President's Putter thrice.
Ted Dexter scored 4502 runs at an average of 47.89 from 62 test matches. After his retirement Ted Dexter continued his affiliation with cricket as a writer and broadcaster. He also held the post of the chairmanship of the "England Committee" briefly.
