Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1950
A great bowler without doubt, Trevor Bailey was also a brilliant fielder and an unrelenting batsman. His characteristic forward defense 'The Bailey Block', anchored England many a times from imminent defeats. Trevor Bailey has to his credit (if it can be called so) the record of scoring the slowest half-century in first class cricket. He took 357 minutes to score his fifty at Brisbane in 1958-59. But when his mood prevailed, Trevor Bailey could destroy any bowling in the world.
Trevor Bailey opened the English's pace attack along with Alec Bedser- the duo was the chief reason for England's dominance in the mid-50's.
Trevor Bailey soon acquired the reputation of being the England's 'Crisis Man', as England owed several of its survivals to his dogged personality. In one instance, he batted for four and half hours on the final day at Lords in partnership with Willie Watson. England went on to win the Ashes and Trevor Bailey had his heroism confirmed.
A few months hence and Trevor Bailey was into the business of winning tests for England again. He took 7 for 34 in 16 overs and careered through the famed West Indian batting line up.
After bidding farewell to test cricket in 1959 and to first class cricket in 1967, Trevor Bailey occupied himself writing books on cricket and as a commentator for BBC.
