Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2000
Described by Shane Warne as the best all-rounder in the world, Christopher Cairns' test record does little to betray the assertion. Infact, his all round skills have led many to liken him to the great Ian Botham- a benchmark for any all-rounder.
Christopher Cairns' batting average reads 33.53 runs per inning and his bowling average is 29.40 from 62 test matches. Christopher Cairns is only next to Richard Hadlee, in taking the most number of wickets for New Zealand. Further, Christopher Cairns is the only seventh cricketer to reach the all-rounder's double of 200 wickets and 3000 runs. In one-day cricket, Christopher Cairns narrowly missed another double of 200 wickets and 5000 runs. He took 201 wickets but missed 5000 runs by fifty more.
Christopher Cairns announced his retirement from test cricket in 2004. He continued appearing in one-day matches until he called quits in early 2006.
