Stewie Dempster is considered the best New Zealand batsman ever. Unfortunately, when he was at his peak as a batsman, New Zealand did not play too many tests. He finished his international career with mere tens tests, where he scored 723 runs at an average of 65.72. When Stewie Dempster first toured England in 1927, it was for an unofficial series. He came out of the series with the best batting average. The first test against England came in 1929-30 season. Stewie Dempster scored 136 and 80 in the second test of the series and shared a partnership of 276 with J. Mills. This remains New Zealand's record partnership for the first wicket.

In the 1931 tour of England, Stewie Dempster averaged 59.26. He also scored a memorable 120 at Lords in the series. Stewie Dempster played cricket for Leicestershire and later captained it. After the war, Stewie Dempster joined Warwickshire for few seasons before returning to New Zealand as a coach.
