Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1983 Imran Khan had a very discouraging start to his cricketing career. As an 18 year old making his debut for Pakistan in 1971 against England, Imran Khan was a total disaster. He was wayward and ordinary and a gloom of uncertainty hung over his future as a cricketer. Imran Khan then displayed what was to be his characteristic 'never say die' attitude and resolved to begin anew. Instead of returning to Pakistan after his dismal show, Imran Khan decided to stay back in England and thus enrolled himself in Royal Grammar School Worcester. The early years in England saw Imran Khan spending long hours toiling at the nets. Those who meant well dissuaded him from taking up bowling and encouraged him to concentrate on batting. The transformation came in the series against Australia in 1977. In the deciding match of the series, Imran Khan finished with 12 wickets and snatched a victory for his team. Not a few who witnessed the match, remarked over the change.

Perhaps the decision to join Kerry Parker's World Series Cricket was the wisest career move Imran Khan made. It was here that Imran Khan changed his bowling style to adopt a more side-on action. In 1982, Imran Khan was entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the side. Pakistan's World Cup triumph in 1992 is largely attributed to his amazing leadership skills.

Imran Khan played in 88 test matches and scored 3807 runs which came at an average of 37.69 and also took 362 wickets at 22.81 runs apiece. His 175 ODI appearances brought him 182 wickets and 3709 runs. Imran Khan fits easily in the elite group of top-class all-rounders comprising Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Ian Botham and himself.
