Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1982
Javed Miandad belonged to the breed of batsmen who relished batting. The kind who would give everything to spend a lazy summer day ambling freely on the pitch while picking some runs along the way.
During such leisurely strolls, Javed Miandad found perfect companionship in his bat, which he used as a garden-tool to beautify the pitch, as a walking stick, and to score runs of course, but sometimes, like the case was in the 1983-84 Australian Tour, his faithful bat could be heaved up as he did against Dennis Lillee and transformed from a benign domestic tool into a potential weapon of war.
Javed Miandad made his debut as an 18 year old against New Zealand at Lahore in 1976. He created news by breaking George Headley's 47 year old record and becoming the youngest to score a century on debut.
One of the most memorable moments in Javed Miandad's cricketing career, which etched an enduring place for him in the hearts of the Pakistani public, came during the Australaisa Cup in 1986.It was the final and the opponent was India. Pakistan needed 4 runs off the last delivery to lift the Cup. Javed Miandad, cool as a sherbet, lobbed Chetan Sharma's low full toss over the boundary line for a 6 - thus snatching a sensational victory.
Javed Miandad played in 124 test matches and scored 8832 runs at an average of 52.57. His 233 ODI appearances brought him7381 runs. Javed Miandad has a unique distinction of being the only one to play five World Cups. Javed Miandad coached the Pakistan team three times.
