Taufeeq Umar was a regular opener in the Pakistani team and with his good performances it was being believed that finally the team had found an opener who would stay for a long time. However, like the fate of the other openers, he too was removed from his duties after a few bad performances ahead of he 2004-'05 session. Taufeeq Umar made his debut for Pakistan in 2001. After some initial nervousness, he began to play well and displayed his talents as a solid batsman, capable of playing shots all over the ground. He did not miss many matches between 2001 and 2004 and averaged a healthy 48 in that period. He put up good shows against strong teams like South Africa. However following his poor form against India in 2004, he was dropped. He did get to make a comeback in 2006, but could not recreate his old form.
