Graeme Smith became the youngest South Africa captain when he took over from Shaun Pollock in 2003 at age 22. It was a little surprising to see him captain the side as neither did he have age or experience to back him. However, his talent spoke for him and he led from the front, taking the team to new heights.
In the 2003 England tour, he scored back to back double centuries in the Tests at Edgbaston and Lords and guided the team to a series win. He did have a few hiccups in 2004 when South Africa fared disastrously in the subcontinent, losing the series' against India and Sri Lanka. He however fought back and found success in the West Indies and became the first captain since 1977 to wrap up a West Indian tour without losing a match.
Being a brilliant player himself, he has always ensured that the team emerges successful. However with an occasional bout of bad ego and a habit of getting into tussles with the opposition and umpires has made him a bit of an unpopular man in the cricketing world. But this is no way minimizes his immense talent that will surely ensure that he becomes one of the greatest players of all time.
