One of the best cricket captains of modern day cricket, Hansie Cronje's leadership quality was acknowledged by one and many. Under his captaincy, South Africa won 27 test matches and lost only 11. In one dayers, of the 138 matches he captained, South Africa won 99. Considering the fact that South African team under Hansie Cronje's charge had not a single world class player, yet it was unbeatable, only underscores the team effort and subsequently Hansie Cronje's inspiring captaincy. In 68 test matches that he played, Hansie Cronje scored 3714 at an average of 36.41 and in 188 one dayers, he scored 5565 runs at an average of 38.64. His bowling was quite effective as is shown by his haul of 43 and 114 wickets in test and one day respectively. In the King's Commission in 2000, when most of those involved in match fixing scandal were busy trading blames on each other, Hansie Cronje stood up and admitted his involvement. Consequently, Hansie Cronje was banned from cricket or coaching it for life. Hansie Cronje, determined to start life afresh, joined a Johannesburg based firm, Bell Equipment in 2002. On June1, 2002, Hansie Cronje, along with the two pilots, was killed in an air crash.

In 2004, a poll was conducted in South Africa to name the 100 Greatest South Africans of all time. Hansie Cronje was placed 11th on the poll list- a fitting tribute to a man who wronged but had the courage to say that he did.
