Lance Klusener, affectionately called Zulu for his proficiency with the language, has been a very useful cricketer, making some valuable contributions with the bat and ball for South Africa over a period of almost 10 years. Though he made his first class debut as a pacer and a number 10 batsman, both of these aspects changed as he began to shine on the international circuit. An ankle injury forced him to become a slower bowler and his immense capacity to hit the ball all over the ground gave him a higher position in the batting line up. At his debut match against India in 1996-'97, he ripped the Indian line up apart with figures of 8 for 64. His good run continued and he was the greatest threat at the 1999 World Cup, a tournament in which he was adjourned Man of the Tournament. His form however seemed to run out after the World Cup and he fared indeed poorly in the 2000-'01 series against the West Indies and against Australia in 2001-'02. His slump continued and he was dropped from the squad. He did get selected for the 2003 World Cup but failed to cease the opportunity and was once again got dropped from the 2003 tour of England, thus putting his career in trouble. He was included in the team for the 2003-04 one-day series against West Indies. He kept his place for the following series in New Zealand, and got a Test recall for the tour of Sri Lanka in 2004. However, it was a brief reappearance as he retired from international cricket joined the African influx at Northants under Kepler Wessels.
