Hailing from a cricketing family, Neil McKenzie was expected to play cricket and lived up to that when he represented South Africa in international cricket. Having had a successful run in the domestic circuit, and having led the under 19 team, McKenzie made his debut in 2000 against Sri Lanka. He succeeded as an opening batsman and was able to cement his position in the side for both forms of the game after a controversy involving the responsibilities of Daryll Cullinan and Jonty Rhodes paved the way for his entry into the squad. He is very strong off his legs and is a consistent batsman. He may not be able to play the spinners too well, but that has not stopped him from playing tactfully and subsequently performing very well for his country.
