Arjuna Ranatunga was a bulky cricketer who captained the Sri Lankan side to World Cup victory in 1996 and was known as a captain who always stood up for the rights of the players. This was specially highlighted in the 1995 Test series against Australia when he infamously argued with Australian umpire Darrell Hair and almost walked out of the ground with his team, following the umpire's decision against Muralitharan.
Ranatunga was never very good when it came to running between the wickets, but he did keep the scoreboard ticking with his intelligent playing technique. He had a long and successful career in cricket that lasted for almost two decades. He played 93 Tests and 269 ODIs. He was dropped from the side after Sri Lanka's disastrous run at the 1999 World Cup. He retired soon after and ever since has been actively involved with Sri Lankan Cricket.
