Ashantha de Silva was an important member of the team that got the test status in 1981-82. Ashantha de Silva forte was the outswinger, which swung rather late. In the inaugural match against England, Ashantha de Silva emerged impressive with figures of 4 for 70 and 1 for 33. The 1983 World Cup was the high point of Ashantha de Silva's cricketing career. As opposed to Sri Lanka's poor performance, Ashantha de Silva had two five-wicket hauls in the tournament. Later in the tour to Pakistan, Ashantha de Silva bagged 11 useful wickets. Then in a test match against India, Ashantha de Silva created history by becoming the first Sri Lankan to get a five-wicket haul in a match. His figures were 5 for 68.
