Hashan Tillakaratne began playing cricket at an early age and in 1986, while still in school he impressed everyone making a hundred against England B. his Test career also took off to a good start and he often made it to the team as a wicketkeeper batsman, capable of contributing big runs. However it was only when in 1994 he decided to concentrate fully on his batting, that he gave up wicketkeeping and the runs began to flow. He did lose his place in the squad after the management decided to go for a younger side after the 1999 World Cup. Hashan Tillakaratne went back to playing domestic cricket and after scoring heavily there, returned to the national squad to assert his position as a class middle order batsman. He had a glorious run, leading to him being announced as captain in 2003. However his luck as captain was not as good and the team performed rather poorly under his leadership. He stepped down in 2004 and since has not played too many international matches.
