An important member of the Sri Lankan side during the team's initial days in the world of Test cricket, Ranjan Madugalle was a striking right-hand batsman whose career record doesn't necessarily do justice to his skills. Debuting in Sri Lanka's maiden Test against England in 1981-82, he stood out by making 65 while the top order fell cheaply. Madugalle was a good player throughout, though he could not succeed in making too many big scores in the longer version of the game. He has only one test century against his name that was scored against India. He was better off at home, averaging 42.76 in matches played at Sri Lanka while abroad it was a measly 21.50. He was only once on the winning side in his 21 Tests. He was captain of Sri Lanka on two occasions, though the experience was disheartening with losses to both Australia and England, and he himself failed to deliver with the bat. After retiring he became an official and subsequently head of ICC's elite panel of match referees.
