Romesh Kaluwitharana made his test debut against Australia in 1992,with a cracking 132 not out. His ODI debut had come couple of years earlier against Pakistan. Even after such a start, Romesh Kaluwitharana's career did not pass without hitches. His competency as a keeper with a safe pair of hands was doubted by many and perhaps it Arjuna Ranatunga's obdurate faith in him that saved him from getting the axe early on.
Romesh Kaluwitharana's career took to newer heights when he paired with Sanath Jayasuria to open innings for Sri Lanka during the 1999 World Cup. Romesh Kaluwitharana became one of the most feared pinch hitters in the world and had played not an insignificant part in Sri Lanka's claiming the Cup.
After the World Cup glory, Romesh Kaluwitharana had to bring major changes in his batting and tighten his loose technique, especially because Kumar Sangakkara was slowly catching the notice of the selectors.
Romesh Kaluwitharana ultimately lost his place to the younger Sangakkara, who was much more compact as a batsman, and made a quiet exit from international. He had played in 49 test matches and 189 ODIs. His average in both forms of the game was in the 20s.
