Russel Arnold came into the Sri Lankan team in 1997 as an opener. In a team which was studded with star batsmen, Russel Arnold found it increasingly difficult to retain his test berth. Not surprisingly, he was relegated into the lower middle order position. In 2002, riding on the confidence shown by his captain Jayasuria, Russel Arnold batted at the top of the order and impressed with scores 62 and 109 against England. He suffered subsequent failures culminating in his omission from the team in July 2004. Never giving up, Russel Arnold worked hard on his batting and scoring prolifically in the domestic circle till he forced a recall in December 2004 for the New Zealand tour. Russel Arnold has now proved to be a perfect number six batsman, through his ability to adapt his game. Russel Arnold is also a useful off break bowler.
