A useful batsman, effective leg spinner and a brilliant fielder, Upul Chandana was, at a point of time, many players combined in one. But most importantly, Upul Chandana improved with each passing year.
In 2002, Upul Chandana was made the captain of the Sri Lanka A against Kenya. He showed remarkable maturity and topped both bowling and batting averages.
In a team that had no dearth of quality spinners, Upul Chandana did not have many moments to be complacent, despite good performances.
Upul Chandana has so far appeared in 16 test matches and scored 616 runs at an average of 26.78. He has also taken 37 wickets. His last one day match was in November 2005; prior to which he had played in 145 one dayers.
