Clive Lloyd, the great West Indies captain led the team brilliantly and took it to new heights. The years between 1974 and 1985 saw the emergence of West Indies as an almost unbeatable side. Most of the credit for this went to Clive Lloyd. He remains as one of the most successful Test captains of all time. With him leading the side, West Indies had 11 consecutive wins, and it took 27 matches to defeat them. He was the first West Indian to play 100 matches.
Lloyd was an immensely talented middle-order batsman and occasionally rolled his arm over. He scored over 7500 runs at Test level, at an average of 46.67. His intellectual look and slight crouch veiled his evident gift as a batsman. His famous glasses added character to his game. Having hit 77 sixes in his Test career, he placed himself as the sixth highest hitter of sixes in the history of the game. He represented Guyana in first-class cricket. He also represented Lancashire and captained the county in 1981. His debuted in 1966 in Tests and in 1971 he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year.
Though he retired from the game, Clive Lloyd's heart still belongs to cricket! Ever since his retirement, he has managed the West Indies side, played the role of a coach, tried his hand at commentary and at present is a respected ICC match referee.
