One of the best opening batsmen the game has ever seen, Gordon Greenidge was a master of his own will. He could go on nudging the ball around and caressing it delicately through the gaps while humming his favorite tune, or if he willed, Gordon Greenidge could turn world-class bowlers into schoolboys learning the hard ropes of test cricket.
Together with Desmond Haynes, Gordon Greenidge gave 16 century stands in test cricket, four of them being over 20 runs.
Gordon Greenidge's finest moment in test cricket came when he scored double-double century in a series against England in 1984. The series was marked by a humiliating 0-5 loss for England in front of its home crowd. Gordon Greenidge made a commanding 214 in the second test and followed it up with 223 in the fourth test.
Gordon Greenidge played county cricket for Hampshire and formed a formidable opening pair with Barry Richards.
